Issac Asimov part 2
Sunday May 23, 2021
Sunday May 23, 2021
Tyler and Hannah are back with the second-part of Isaac Asimov’s life story. The prolific sci-fi writer penned somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 books and probably pinched that many butts too. Seriously. Guy was a serial harasser. Our fearless co-hosts get lost on many tangents including “Dune” author Frank Herbert’s critique of “The Foundation” series, why more of Asimov’s stuff didn’t get turned into movies, and why his family kept his real cause of death a secret for a decade.

SCI-FI Flash Fiction!!

Sci-fi flash fiction special 2021
- “Rust” by Laura Nettles - A first-time contributor, Laura offers a jaw-dropping take on the age-old alien invader storyline. And after we finished recording, Hannah found her website! Check out more of Laura’s work at https://www.lauranettles.com
- “The Quest” by Paul Waterman - Paul knocks it out of the park again with this cautionary tale. He co-owns our favorite bookstore, https://www.booknookcanby.com
- “Untitled” by Karlie Blackmore - Karlie brings us the diary-style ravings of what might be a lunatic or the most enlightened person on planet Earth. You be the judge.
- “Simulating Reality” by Michael WIlson - Amusing take on a popular theory? Or a story rife with existential dread? Tyler and Hannah have different takes, but both agree Michael’s story is great.
- “Keystone” by Steve Cain - Super powerful robots have taken over the world and are using humans to perform blue collar jobs in Steve’s latest contribution to BL&L. His fifth book also dropped recently! https://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Cain-Writer/100063602013681/
- “When at War” by Tallan Paul - The official boyfriend-of-the-podcast returns with a jaw-dropping tale where the emergence of monsters is not the biggest twist.
- “The Others” by Hannah Ray Lambert - The BL&L cohost shows us a post-apocalyptic world through the eyes of a little girl, unaware of the army advancing on her home.
- “Will We Dream in Cryosleep?” by Brianna Fenty - An accomplished short story writer and soon-to-be published novelist, Brianna spins a somber story set in outerspace. https://www.briannafenty.com
- “The Legacy of Ryder” by Aly Fitzgerald - The longtime friend-of-the-podcast breaks the flash fiction rules with this time traveling tale that demands a sequel. Or two. Or three. Seriously Aly. Please do more. @_alyfitzgerald
- “We're Pleased to Please You” by Curtis Deeter - Reading like a Yelp ad from the future, our return contributor’s story straps the reader into one of EuphorINC’s StayCation pods and doesn’t let them out. Check out more of the accomplished sci-fi writer’s work at https://curtisadeeter.com
- “Kirby Dyson and the Vacuum of Space” by Tyler Clawson - Last, but certainly not least, Tyler introduces us to the heroic Kirby Dyson, who discovers that her vacuum is a portal to outerspace.
We want to give a huge thank you to our readers for lending us their voices. James Walton and Joy Strube from the Canby Now Podcast were a pleasure to work with, as always.
First-time reader Mason Mostoller crushed it with not one but two stories. He’s the Dungeon Master for Critseekers. https://www.twitch.tv/critseekers
Dalena Garcia (AKA Tyler’s mom) did a wonderful job once again. And, keeping it in the family, Producer Cam narrated and mixed “Keystone.” The production value was *chef’s kiss*
Aly Fitzgerald not only wrote and voiced her own story, but narrated another submission as well. Our friend is an incredibly talented actress and part of one of Tyler’s all-time favorite D&D shows, Fables of Refuge. @fables_of_refuge
Two other members of the Fables family, Jess Ayers and Jarrett Sullivan, both returned to the program. Thank you thank you thank you, you brilliant humans. @jessnextdoor @jarrettsullivan
Thank you to everyone who made this show possible!

Correspondence: Scott Minor of Realm Makers
Tuesday Apr 20, 2021
Tuesday Apr 20, 2021
Tyler sits down and talks to Scott Minor from Realm Makers. An organization that is dedicated to the support and promotion and education of Speculative Fiction Authors who have a Faith in Jesus Christ. And while that might seem like we're describing a bible study at church, you be surprised by wide a range of people share this commonality. Tyler gushes over the great work that this group is doing, and Scot shares the origin story of this convention that has grown to become of the largest gatherings of Christian nerds, weirdos, creatives, storytellers and all around great people. There are also Amish Vampires in space... so get ready for that.

Kazuo Ishiguro (Lorna MacDougall's Husband)
Monday Apr 12, 2021
Monday Apr 12, 2021
Kazuo Ishiguro is the Nobel Prize winning author of short stories and novels including “Remains of the Day” and “Never Let Me Go,” both adapted into films. He’s also a screenwriter and musician. Tyler hates him for his success. Hannah likes him for his calming voice and British accent. Hannah and Tyler both read Ishiguro’s latest novel, “Klara and the Sun,” and discuss it at length. Ty-Ty the Bible Guy makes an enlightening appearance, weird sex talk happens for no apparent reason, and we have a live studio audience!
Spoilers for “Never Let Me Go” start at 43:30 and end at 52:40
Spoilers for “Klara and the Sun” start at 54:45 and end at 1:09:42.

Hannah sits down (virtually) with Rachel Parker, a romance novel enthusiast and reader of an obscene number of books. Truly. You will not believe how many books she read last year. We talk about the many subgenres of romance (bully romance is a thing?), why Nicholas Sparks doesn’t count as a romance novelist, trends in the genre and industry, how to get ARCs, and the types of novels Rachel will NOT read.

Welcome back to Between Lewis and Lovecraft Correspondence. I got to talk with bookstagrammer and romance novel enthusiast Rachel Parker in January. I’m telling you right now, you will not believe how many books she read last year. We talk about that and the many facets of romance novels, as well as the types of stories Rachel straight up refuses to read.
Rachel Parker
Read.with.rach
You’re kind of a recent convert to the romance genre, right? Did you read a lot before? Why not romance then?
I saw your New Year’s Eve instagram post and I just need to ask you to make sure it’s not a typo, but how many books did you read in 2020?
Do you mostly read new releases, or do you read stuff that’s been published a decade or even longer ago too? Have you noticed any changes in the genre over time?
History of the genre (harlequin)
Embracing the “smut” stereotype
Independently published romances vs. traditional
Easiest genre to get into?
Where Roses Grow Wild
Meg's writing career began in 1998 when her first historical romance for adults, Where Roses Grow Wild, was published under the pen name Patricia Cabot so her grandmother wouldn't know she was writing books with sex in them.
