Robert Jordan — How the Wheel of Time Creator Became an Icon of the Fantasy Genre
James Oliver Rigney Jr. (better known by his pen name Robert Jordan) is best known for his breakout fantasy series "The Wheel of Time," which breathed new life into a genre that had grown somewhat stale since Tolkien took the scene by storm decades earlier. But before he wrote the several million words that would become his legacy, Rigney/Jordan served in Vietnam, became a nuclear engineer, and had a near-death experience that inspired him to finally pick up a pen. AND he was a good husband and human, y'all, which Tyler and Hannah were very excited to learn. Longtime listeners know we don't get to feature a lot of healthy relationships on this show, but you'll be delighted to hear about Rigney/Jordan's marriage to Harriet McDougal a woman who was, incidentally, also a huge part of shaping the "Wheel of Time" series.
Also, Tyler announces the upcoming release of his fantasy sitcom series "The Penny Lich," available June 7th!

Tyler's Back, Wheel of Time, and Why Hannah Struggles So Hard With High Fantasy
Tyler is officially back in the studio after taking a few months off to be with his wife and new son. And Hannah is relieved, to say the least. Both of us need more time to prep for the next couple of episodes which will cover the lives of fantasy authors Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, but we wanted to check in, offer a preview of the upcoming episodes, and discuss fantasy as a genre (and some of its main sub-genres).
We also read an existential piece of kitchen flash fiction from friend of the pod Steve Cain.
If you've written something short and sweet, send it in and we might read it on a future episode!

Dan Brown — The Religious Evolution of the Angels & Demons Author
Sunday May 01, 2022
Sunday May 01, 2022
Dan Brown is the author of the bestselling Robert Langdon series, which follows a Harvard professor of symbology who must solve clues and codes in a race against the clock in each installment. Perhaps most famous is "The Da Vinci Code," Brown's first bestselling novel and the one that drew the ire of the Catholic Church. But as Hannah, Tyler, and special guest cohost Aly Fitzgerald learned, Brown's religious views are much more complicated than the prevailing narrative would have you believe.
We also discuss his childhood, early music career (spoiler: it involves a lot of synthesizers), and acrimonious divorce.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) is one of Russia's most acclaimed writers. His most famous novels include Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov. Although Dostoevsky created many works that were celebrated even within his lifetime, his life was anything but easy. He became orphaned as a teenager, was exiled to Siberia for reading banned materials, and struggled with disastrous spending habits that nearly lost him a decade of his work.
Tyler is still on hiatus so Hannah sits down with a different Tyler. Tyler Francke is a journalist and co-owner and founder of Now Hear This Media.
Now, we had added Dostoevsky to the episode lineup way back in the winter. Then, just as Hannah was picking up her biography (The Sinner and the Saint: Dostoevsky and the Gentleman Murderer Who Inspired a Masterpiece by Kevin Birmingham) to start research for the episode, Vladimir Putin's army invaded Ukraine. If you're not up to date on the current situation in Eastern Europe, Hannah's coworkers are doing fantastic on the ground reporting on the war, its horrific toll, and the Ukrainian people's fierce resistance.
Francke and Hannah talked briefly about postponing the episode for a time when Russia wasn't such a hot topic, but ultimately decided that they didn't want to punish Dostoevsky, a writer who was almost executed for standing up to a corrupt regime in his own lifetime, for the current Russian dictator's sins. The pair also discuss the many ways in which the Russia of today still resembles the Russia of Dostoevsky's time.
The episode has plenty of laughs too: Hannah can't pronounce "Moscow" (but has a valid excuse!), Dostoevsky makes a bad business deal, and Francke’s Kenny Rogers joke goes way over Hannah’s head.

Today Tyler joined by Tom Philips who can’t wait to be inducted into our cult… er… crew, here at BLL.
He is an author, Screenwriter, video editor, Dungeons and Dragons Player. Who has just started the presale of his latest book, The Curious League of Detectives and Thieves 1: Egypt's Fire. Tyler was so excited to be chatting with such a cool guy, and hopefully he doesn’t through the thin vale of our indoctrination ritual.
You can find his presale going on right now until June 2022:

Talking Story — Coast Salish Myths and Legends
Friday Feb 25, 2022
Friday Feb 25, 2022
Hannah is struggling to fill the void Tyler left in this podcast, but (boy)friend of the podcast Tallan Paul is here to help talk story. Coast Salish Native American story, that is.
Follow along with Hannah as she gets so close to understanding what's going on in these myths and legends, then immediately slides back to square one. Both hosts may have imbibed just a little too much during recording, but they try to stay on topic. Tallan and Hannah read some stories around 50:00, then around 1:04:00 there's a final tangent about kushtakas, Tallan's favorite mythological creature and one that Hannah just doesn't get.

Michael Crichton - From Harvard Medical School to Jurassic Park
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
Wednesday Feb 09, 2022
Graduating with from Harvard Medical School would be a career-defining moment for most people, but for Michael Crichton it was merely a footnote on a monumental creative legacy. After finally publishing a bestselling sci-fi novel in his final year of school, Crichton would go on to create fantastic fictional realms including "Westworld" and "Jurassic Park."
Tyler's off being a dad, so Hannah sits down with this week's guest host (and longtime friend of the pod) Devani Anjali to examine Crichton's early success publishing paperback thrillers to pay his way through college, his rise to international movie director, and relationship drama.
